Causes of bulimia
Bulimia is more than just a food problem. It is often triggered by dieting, stress, or negative emotions (anger or sadness). The cause of bulimia is yet to be discovered, but a lot of scientists believe that there are several contributing factors, such as
- Culture promoting perfectly shaped women with no bodily flaws,
- Stressful events , such as rape.
- Low self esteem , which may lead to depression.
- Genetic predisposition .
- Parents and siblings , who think that looks are very important and judge others by their appearance?
The onset of bulimia nervosa is often during adolescence (between 13 and 20 years of age), with many sufferers relapsing in adulthood into episodic binging and purging even after initially successful treatment and remission.
